A well-recognised and outspoken sports personality, Stephen is a former Republic of Ireland International footballer and is best known for his tireless footballing displays and controversial opinions off the pitch.
Born in Laois, Ireland, however, Stephen grew up in Waterford and was also a talented hurler as well as a footballer. He enjoyed a 16 year footballing career playing at various clubs in England, appearing in the top four tiers of English football.
Stephen has an occasional column with the Irish Independent and has indulged himself in the business side of football, often meeting directors and chief executives of football. He is leaving his options open for a role in punditry, coaching or even player agent work.
A left midfielder or left back, Stephen played Premiership football with Reading, Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
His domestic career also took in spells at Crystal Palace, Brentford, Ipswich and Coventry City. He won Promotion to the Premier League with Reading and also picked up the Player of The Year award at both Reading and Hull City.
Stephen won 39 caps for the Republic of Ireland, scoring one goal during this time.
He was selected as part of the UEFA Euro 2012 squad by Giovanni Trapattoni but did not feature in any of the three matches.
